Parallel Interiors: Milla-Kariina Oja Solo exhibition

“Goodbye my window, goodbye my walls, goodbye room, goodbye…I was 18. I sat at the riverbank writing my diary and saying goodbye to my home sweet home where I had lived all my life. I had left without packing my things, without closing the door behind me, I did not know I wasn´t going back.

And now, I was far away already, yet in my mind so present..”

Milla-Kariina Oja´s new exhibition Parallel Interiors observes the concepts of private space and borders. The works in the exhibition are based on interviews the artist has done during the past few years in China and in Finland. By investigating the characteristics of different individual spaces, her work attempts to ask what is similar between them, what connects the spaces together not architecturally or materially but on an emotional level.
“In our memories the spaces we have lived in get the same meaning. They have all been shelters for us, spaces of protection and comfort. In our memories they become one.”

The exhibition consists of video projections and sound installation. The repeated sentences are gathered directly from the interviews.

This exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Frame Visual Art Finland.
